Because most of the days in the last year have been family days...the five of us together because there isn't anywhere else to go. Thanks, Covid (which I mean both sarcastically and seriously...because a lot of it has been a complete gift. But also, it's covid, so a total bummer, too). <br /></p><p>Family Day gifted us a nice sleep in and the fun of a free Monday. After a lazy breakfast of eggs Benny and time for everyone to do their own thing for a few hours (homework, work, reading), we headed out for some time in the freezing cold. A quick Blizzard stop (red velvet and oreo) and then off to Wreck Beach. </p><p>There was a bit of conversation on the way to the beach about how a nude beach translates into February weather. Will there be nudie people down there, or not? Just as we were parking, an unusual, but jolly fellow crossed the street in front of us. He was grooving along to his own little beat, wearing a funky little outfit of layers and colours, while snacking on a box of triscuts. I don't know if he noticed us staring, but he grinned at us (somewhat menacingly) through the windshield and tossed a triscut on at our car (?!). So...he'd be the kind of guy to get naked on a cold beach. We really hoped THAT scene wouldn't be a part of our family day...</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxm0Ert7pysithZSd9LpQT2sQFNtWVUjRsaJafwoByRQTk-WSfUKOnLcv8FiL7mODy2McU0cxnxDOiIA4EAI4dM_mypDdeMt-mLfE6Pg-QGWdJ_E_-uRTSQ0pgiXfag3EchC4/s4032/IMG_7868.HEIC" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxm0Ert7pysithZSd9LpQT2sQFNtWVUjRsaJafwoByRQTk-WSfUKOnLcv8FiL7mODy2McU0cxnxDOiIA4EAI4dM_mypDdeMt-mLfE6Pg-QGWdJ_E_-uRTSQ0pgiXfag3EchC4/w480-h640/IMG_7868.HEIC" width="480" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">On our way down the stairs...</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlulS-bdxuVKkp-IGLwWXTK3yD_1xd2llUBH6-Y1i5HcLHxPtVppq0f6Mo3U2Ay24WOJLyDYLY_br4ocB2yKjsPY_biXdNB4A-zJVw_oC4HyJIyOn84sG_njaejBB7wzImjlM/s4032/IMG_7869.HEIC" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlulS-bdxuVKkp-IGLwWXTK3yD_1xd2llUBH6-Y1i5HcLHxPtVppq0f6Mo3U2Ay24WOJLyDYLY_br4ocB2yKjsPY_biXdNB4A-zJVw_oC4HyJIyOn84sG_njaejBB7wzImjlM/w640-h480/IMG_7869.HEIC" width="640" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Maybe Finny looks a little cold...?</td></tr></tbody></table><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div>Down on the beach, it was freezing. It still doesn't feel normal to hang out on the front step. I miss Sunday dinners and hanging out in the den or the kitchen. It will feel so good to be back inside home and hugging Mum and Dad. In the mean time, more front porch conversations. And if look closely in the picture below, you can see that Finny asked Lukey to hug her at Gram's height and she closed her eyes to imagine it was a Gram hug. I had to laugh, but it is also pretty sad. </div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhR48teykPSPioAjyoCPNh7g6QLCYlqZkTTKiDdYtxyNm-QObEav99wVmwNpSzmH3PF_yXpoQSYMzmuGObmQw0B0XKGVSR9zgih9HJZqKGgSVTLt03kGcc2FnuQTnDm-Frr3sM/s4032/IMG_5456.HEIC" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhR48teykPSPioAjyoCPNh7g6QLCYlqZkTTKiDdYtxyNm-QObEav99wVmwNpSzmH3PF_yXpoQSYMzmuGObmQw0B0XKGVSR9zgih9HJZqKGgSVTLt03kGcc2FnuQTnDm-Frr3sM/w480-h640/IMG_5456.HEIC" width="480" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Mum sent the kids home with photo albums full of pictures from her collection. All three kids were happy/sad flipping through the books. There is an odd feeling in all of us. Time is standing still (it is a real life Groundhog Day) but it is also passing so quickly. It's like no time since Molly was in Grade 12 and Lukey was just starting high school. Covid has stretched out and now Molly's solidly a university student and it feels like Finny is closing on the end of high school. No basketball season, but Lukey has grown almost 6 inches in the last year. It's all so odd...</div><br />We ended the night with a booked swim in our strata pool. What's a booked swim in our own complex pool, you ask? Again, Covid. It has been closed for eleven months. And now we have to book it. And pay $5.<div><br /></div><div>I had missed the hot tub, though. And that beach was cold. So I was looking forward to a nice soak. Until we got into the pool room. And I put my toe in the "hot" tub. It. Was. Cold. </div><div><br /></div><div>Bummed. So, so bummed. Eric and the kids played for a bit and then we headed home. But I took a small detour. On our way out, I slow motioned bailed HARD into the bushes outside the pool door. Lukey and Finny were simultaneously completely entertained and horrified. I hurt my hand, my toe, my leg. It was also really, really ugly. </div><div><br /></div><div>So, yep. Bad pool trip for sure. <br /><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqOV_FFlN5Lin1sDcD1Ls6KVWUEUpVuMMzyacIxVQrIN_YMaSMolYo2x9ngD1kfQfC0WNF_cMHKJs9vnRppvs9AwKGtLB-re4kG51NoMlWULm5l6EBG-yhjGYL0ZiCIbV_piw/s4032/IMG_5461.HEIC" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqOV_FFlN5Lin1sDcD1Ls6KVWUEUpVuMMzyacIxVQrIN_YMaSMolYo2x9ngD1kfQfC0WNF_cMHKJs9vnRppvs9AwKGtLB-re4kG51NoMlWULm5l6EBG-yhjGYL0ZiCIbV_piw/w480-h640/IMG_5461.HEIC" width="480" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /></div>Ericandleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03556627406997678225noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16157183.post-82908842822554794102020-09-09T23:37:00.001-07:002020-09-09T23:37:39.741-07:00Viking Girl<p> </p><p>It is so strange. I remember heading to UVic and moving into residence like it was yesterday. But it wasn't. It was 28 years ago. Oh. My. God. </p><p>Molly started at UVic today. But she's here at home. She and Eric went for a morning bike ride down to Granville Island. </p><p>Training wheels. We put them on a bike when we just don't know if we can balance. Watch a kid ride with training wheels and sometimes the kid is basically riding sideways, leaning all their weight on the training wheels. But usually they are riding a bike for real, but the training wheels give them confidence. It's less scary, even if you aren't using them. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoBI6e2zp9CF1FHz_zdNbpYbIP-n48FxUA3f52wmLSuWLISiZDnaqHTgrbbg85pvuUtyfBj8gnIN6jnoidvyGcRo2nqwpLChkJq-rZEJIxBir3lP-h61_YFSJogayjkG4si1U/s3088/IMG_6754.HEIC" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2316" data-original-width="3088" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoBI6e2zp9CF1FHz_zdNbpYbIP-n48FxUA3f52wmLSuWLISiZDnaqHTgrbbg85pvuUtyfBj8gnIN6jnoidvyGcRo2nqwpLChkJq-rZEJIxBir3lP-h61_YFSJogayjkG4si1U/w640-h480/IMG_6754.HEIC" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div>Molly came home and got online for her first class: Social Sciences, Perspectives on Cities. I even got to hear some of the lectures. In fact, she just brought me a cup of tea.</p><p>It is a little less scary this way. Molly being at home, it is a bit like training wheels. I know she could do it, going away to school. And I am pretty sure I could do it, too. But there are silver linings all over this crazy global pandemic. And this silver lining is like training wheels for both of us. Just a bit of confidence before she sets off on her own.</p></div>Ericandleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03556627406997678225noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16157183.post-53146065700696863142020-09-08T22:35:00.001-07:002020-09-08T22:35:21.491-07:00The Last Weekend of the Longest Spring Break in the History of the WORLD<p> </p><p><br /></p><p>Haha...! The kids got out of school the second week of March and they go back this week (Thursday for Lukey and Friday for Finny...Molly starts online UVic tomorrow). That is a nice nearly six month break. The longest spring break ever.</p><p>But it doesn't matter how much time you get on your "break", you want more. The kids are all looking forward to school, but it still lamenting "going back". I don't know how long it would have to before they were really psyched. I hope we don't find out...haha (450+ Covid cases this last weekend mean numbers are going up, so I really hope we don't go back). </p><p>So, in the interest of getting the last squeeze out of summer, we headed to Vancouver Island. I booked an AirBnB at a condo on Yellow Point (just a bit outside of Ladysmith). I spent a bunch of time trolling last minute sites and short term rental sites trying to find something good. When I spotted this one, I jumped on it. </p><p>What didn't I think about? Ferries. In the Summer of BC, ferries reservations are like Gold and the Rush is ON. I looked and all the reservations from Duke Point were looooooong gone. I scrounged around and found a Monday reservation (I even went on Craigslist) from Departure Bay. Nothing for Friday. </p><p>Nothing for Friday of the last long weekend of the summer (with a stellar weather forecast)? Hmmmm. Two choices: take three meals, a couple of books, some chairs and your toothbrush because you will be at the ferry terminal ALL day OR wake up at the crack of dawn. Nope, BEFORE the crack of dawn and cross your fingers.</p><p>So that's what we did. Here's us waiting in line and watching the sun rise:</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMkHDgkG44psLLKBfd0HL3vNb9CYzExjgffgaDv4Fve1yy76xgv2K_RhzEgweITMwq6lHetjayWcjcYVUWnLnupTDkJMh0MYc_efA0AaAhCjTcJstbP2hodSTblAidEPrtjOk/s4032/IMG_3697.HEIC" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMkHDgkG44psLLKBfd0HL3vNb9CYzExjgffgaDv4Fve1yy76xgv2K_RhzEgweITMwq6lHetjayWcjcYVUWnLnupTDkJMh0MYc_efA0AaAhCjTcJstbP2hodSTblAidEPrtjOk/w480-h640/IMG_3697.HEIC" width="480" /></a></div><div><br /></div> We watched a whole movie before we got on the ferry. Remember when we bought a summer cabin in Point Roberts, partly with the rationale that if it were close, we would use it a lot. Which has been true. I have said here before that I simply don't have the organizational fortitude to tackle two week trips to gulf island that require you to pack and take every single item you will possibly need for your whole holiday, including food (how do people do it?!). I am more of a, "shoot, I forgot half the things on my list for today's food...I'll be right back" kind of person. <div><br /></div><div>Point Roberts isn't quite as nice as a gulf island. But it isn't nearly as hard to manage. We spend a lot of time there and sometimes we even cross the border a few times a day: running home quickly, quick grocery trip, DQ trip...whatever!</div><div><br /></div><div>So, we didn't see the pandemic coming. Or the border being closed for the whole summer. Crazy. No Point Roberts for us. Hello BC Summer!</div><div><br /></div><div>We looked at the forecast and saw a pure heat coming up, so booked one night at Whistler at the Pan Pacific. We got up early and hit the road and also hit every lake we could find on our way up (and down).</div><div><br /></div><div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVPJFXPiMf4wlFtz1NJ_87an22awzlXpdlbH9v3mumgo8NOvBsYWLSNF6HOeiaotUNk9Bda_kYUNqvenRuPJC4ce32pFo71cSU1GreHdwaAAt3bDs22uiVAyqVm2GA97Ypi0E/s4032/IMG_6193.HEIC" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVPJFXPiMf4wlFtz1NJ_87an22awzlXpdlbH9v3mumgo8NOvBsYWLSNF6HOeiaotUNk9Bda_kYUNqvenRuPJC4ce32pFo71cSU1GreHdwaAAt3bDs22uiVAyqVm2GA97Ypi0E/s640/IMG_6193.HEIC" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>The one issue with having an Inside BC summer is that so is everyone else. Covid? Oh, just a wee global pandemic that has kept us inside since March 17th (aside from time outside and distanced and inside in oddly rearranged grocery stores).<br />
<br />
I will be doing some Covid posts, but to get me in the mood (and because we spent about 45 minutes reading blog books out loud tonight), I just need to jump in.<br />
<br />
One of the most dreaded questions under any circumstances, but especially Covid-times, is "what's for dinner?". Two of the three kids are endlessly hungry these days. And grocery stores are weird. So it gets annoying.<br />
<br />
I had a zoom call with the BYTs tonight and it was getting late, so Eric suggested pizza. We ordered on the app and we were chatting. Finny came into the kitchen from upstairs, asking...you guessed it....what's for dinner. Argh.<br />
<br />
Hot dogs (she hates hot dogs). She moaned. I knew she would. I protested (pretty good acting, I thought). I told her the BBQ was already heating up (the BBQ was sitting next to her on the floor stone cold and inside). She begged for...wait for it...pizza. I knew she would. No, I told her. No pizza. No, Eric told her. No pizza. Hot dogs. And stop moaning.<br />
<br />
She started to gear up her propaganda machine. She always has an angle and a sales pitch. And she really hates hot dogs. She started to bargain. She quickly got to a year of no complaining basketball filming for Split Second. That sounded like a pretty good deal for a dinner we had already ordered. I fake protested that under no circumstances should Eric make that deal. No...don't do it. They shook on it.<br />
<br />
And then I showed her the pizzas, all ready to be picked up and ready to go.<br />
<br />
She says she has never felt more betrayed. We enjoyed it very much :)<br />
<br />
Although, as a postscript, in her next breath, she started bargaining for WAGES for the filming. She never lets up, that girl!<br />
<br />
P.P.S. It's after 1:00 in the morning and the kids are downstairs in their rooms in a nerf gun battle. We have lost the fight. Covid-times are strange!Ericandleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03556627406997678225noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16157183.post-20995210281427244582020-02-24T10:00:00.000-08:002020-07-31T10:00:40.923-07:00Driving with Miss Molly (and her brother and sister)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Over the years, I have deluded myself that our family morning routine of dropping each of the kids off at school is a precious time to connect with them before the rigors of a busy day. In theory, this sounds great. A few moments to start our day together in the same space. In practice, this seldom works. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Sometimes, it does. There are magical unicorn days that have us running mysteriously ahead of schedule. The cupboards are full of good lunch foods and the kids are walking out together, joking with one another, bags full of sandwiches, snacks and fruit in reusable containers. Everyone gets to school on time and with parting words of love. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Unicorn days. Like, crazy rare/imaginary.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Other days, there are hastily assembled food oddities left on the counter for the kids to scrounge through and mostly leave behind. Inevitably, one person takes FOREVER to get out of the door and makes the other two IRATE and LATE. This feud starts in the driveway with anger and recrimination and continues for the entirety of the journey. Every single comment by every single person ignites a series of criticisms or mockery. Everyone's nerves are frayed and exposed. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

It was miserable and mean. And we were late. There was blame. At the end of Finny's ride, she said that if that had been an Uber ride, she would have given me the lowest possible rating. I wondered out loud if we could rate passengers...her rating would ALSO have been VERY LOW.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Long story short, by the time we had delivered Lukey and it was just me and Molly in the car, she climbed into the front seat and we put on a song we both like (and these are usually the songs reviled by the other two). We turned the corner off of Discovery Street and it was a completely different experience. We were singing and the heavy blanket of the other two and their grumpy morning had been dropped off with Lukey. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">"Mumma, if I were rating my Uber ride, you'd get perfect."</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I don't have endless car rides to school with that girl left. Far from endless, in fact. Very few. I'm happy my rating is high. </div>

Molly's birthday. Her 17th. How did this happen? It feels like just yesterday that Pidge and I were touring a brewery in Germany on Molly's first birthday (isn't that what every one year old MOST wants to do?). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There is no more lovely 17 year old anywhere, I promise. She is the best. Quantifiably so. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On her birthday morning, she played hooky and Lukey (who had a pro-d day) and I went down to Granville Island for some breakfast and chai lattes. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
We also peppered Moll with gifts throughout the day. One of her very first was the exercise ball chair that we found on our way home from dropping her off at school. Lukey and I were driving home and spotted it outside on the curb with a "free" sign. Awesome!! He snagged it and we wiped it off at home and put it in her room to surprise her.<br />
<br />
Her very own street ball seat. She loved it...until she found out it was abandoned on the road. I am not sure it was her very favourite gift. It certainly made us laugh.<br />

Meanwhile, it was onwards with Thanksgiving weekend. Saturday Lukey umped his very first game from the plate. He came back with $30 and the new knowledge that umping isn't as easy as he thought. And a little scarier...he trusts his own glove as a catcher a little bit more than he does some kid he's never laid eyes on before.<br />
<br />
So, we will see if it makes him any more patient a batter...no more ump hate?<br />

It's baseball playoffs. Last year, Lukey and my mum had a running bet that involved an exchange of apple picking (if Lukey lost) and fun-making (if Lukey won). They have reprised the wager this year. And since Lukey knows he doesn't have to fight anyone with a remote to be able to watch baseball (we only have one tv), he heads over to mum's because baseball is always on there. Mum makes awesome (and endless) snacks. He might move in.<br />

Nice days are few and far between, so when the sun was shining on Saturday, we decided to make use of our family Van Dusen pass and go for a walk. Lukey elected to go to Gram's and walk baseball. Shocking!<br />
<br />
It was a gorgeous day. Armed with Chai Tea Lattes, we ran races (don't talk about it...it was contentious and Finny for sure would rather we either rematch or shut up about it) and timed maze escapes. Eric killed us...but Molly was second.<br />

That's a good Saturday. Sunday Molly and Finny went to swim in the wave pool with Omi and Lukey and Eric had BCCBA games. I stayed home, worked, cooked, grocery shopped and cleaned up a bit. Also sort of peaceful and lovely.<br />
<br />
And, now back to the weekly routine :)<br />

Mmmmm, everyone loved Fritter Friday. Except we made them on a Monday. Fritter Monday sounds lame. </div>

The new kitchen is inspiring. I am baking. And cooking. Even making little sour cream fritters!</div>

Saturday morning bright and early was drop off time for Lukey to head to over on a day trip to Shawnigan Lake for rugby. He was the very last to arrive (ran into the group shot below about 0.03 seconds before it was taken). He was maybe a bit nervous (Shawnigan was inaccurately rumoured to be really strong) but game to go. A long day, but a lot of boys on ferries and buses...what's better than that?</div>

Meanwhile, since I was taking Finny out to Coquitlam for a volleyball tournament (9:00 am start), Molly and Eric were left to themselves (Emma had stayed overnight after meeting Molly at the climate march downtown, but she headed back to the Northshore really early). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So what would Molly and Eric get up to...? Finny and I predicted Eric on his computer and Molly lounging around drawing and watching movies. We were totally wrong. </div>

<br />
So while those two had the most hipster Saturday ever, Finny and I embraced suburban life. In between games in Coquitlam we hit the two most popular Coquitlam attractions: strip malls and the regular mall. We hit Chapters and Gap Factory before heading to Coquitlam Centre. Not exactly avocado toast and yoga...<br />
<br />
But it was all worth it. The Jr. YHS Tigers took the win for the tournament over a tough Pinetree team in the final. Finny played great and was a true Gr 10 anchor (there are only two of them) for her team.<br />

Or maybe I just need to remember to take pictures. Better ones than screenshots of basketball stuff and things I want to text Molly (ie. cute animals or cool art projects). That doesn't make for good blogging. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Poor Finny was home sick again this morning, Lukey forgot it was a late morning for him and Molly was early for school, which was a small miracle. The bonus was getting to shop at Stongs with Lukey to kill time. That's pathetic. I felt it as I typed it. Younger Lesley rabbit punches older Lesley in the face for the ridiculous sentiment of bonus grocery shopping. What's wrong with me (but it was sort of nice, younger Lesley...he's good company and lifts the bags up AND wheels the cart around!)?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There was a bunch of work in the middle and then a volleyball game for Finny at Crofton. And in the middle of the day, a phone call from Molly panicking that she didn't have enough Grade 11 courses to get into university. GRADE 11 courses. Her two years look like this:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
If they are going to punish you for taking 10 Grade 12 courses, then university can just shove it.<br />
<br />
I made a good dinner and my kitchen is still making me really happy.Ericandleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03556627406997678225noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16157183.post-16487271081845309802019-09-23T22:53:00.004-07:002019-09-25T23:24:08.372-07:00This girl<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Grad pictures...how did this happen? How did we end up here, with a kid on the brink of heading out into the world? With a girl who looks mature, beautiful and world-ready (ish, world-ready-ish)?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I imagine her the first day of school. The start of gradual entry of afternoon kindergarten...the gentlest of school beginnings. A churning tummy full of blueberry yoghurt that overflowed in nerves. All over her (and me) in the bathroom at False Creek. A quick 12 years later (that sounds sarcastic, but it isn't) and she is looking glorious and oh-so herself in a black dress with Converse. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

She isn't mature, not yet. She still cuddles her hamster at night and laughs when I do voices pretending to be the interior monologue of squirrels we see on lawns. But, hey...I'd do those things, too. Ernie is cute and those voices are hilarious. </div>

The highlight of today (although not a bad day, all in all :) was crocheting with my Moo from 7-9 today at Three Bags Full. Mum got this as a gift for us. We got to leave behind the rest of the family in their own flurry of dinner and mayhem. We hopped in the car and entered the tranquility of wool lined walls and the most mellow playlist available on Spotify. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It is was pouring rain on Main Street outside, so it felt like a warm little oasis. Even the crochet came pretty easily (for both of us!) and it was really nice after very full days of using my brain to challenge it to do something totally different. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Here's my first attempt. I felt pretty good about it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Molly and I weren't too sure about the crochet crowd, but we will reserve judgement (or at least, I will...Molly is pretty judgy). Now I get to look forward to three more Tuesdays with my Molly. And that's a treat.<br />
<br />Ericandleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03556627406997678225noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16157183.post-1377349546310601482019-09-16T23:29:00.001-07:002019-09-16T23:29:13.294-07:00Day 15Well, I missed a day. It was going to happen. I didn't skip it because I didn't feel like it...I just forgot. And, I am not going to let it throw me off...I am back on the wagon!<br />
<br />
Things have smoothed out a little bit. Molly's timetable is sorted out (all for the best, I think) and we are relaxing into a bit more of a routine for the rest of us. We have a kitchen and a table and couches. It's nice. Odd aside...? All of our spoons seem to be gone. It's like they saw the renovation as an opportunity to make the great escape.<br />
<br />
There is so much work to get done right now. It is non-stop. Luckily, I have my trusty (and somewhat glare-y) buddy to help me FOR HOURS with inputting Cobra schedules. She was the best. We listened to good music, had good snacks and got tons done. And cash went into Molly's pocket! She was really good at helping and made a few big catches. Best work friend EVER.<br />
<br />

<br />
And today, we missed rugby practice (Lukey) and the parent meeting (me), so we can be kept humble that we don't have things too sorted. But I did make a great hamburger soup in time for Lukey to eat before hockey and Finny before basketball. Just so darn grateful to have appliances :)<br />

For real. Every morning that we don’t have to get up, Eric and I stir and usually ask, “Are you awake?” And it is like, 7:00. What the heck? I’m tired. I go to bed late (like right now). It just doesn’t work anymore.<br />
<br />
It was a treat to come downstairs today and make coffee in THE KITCHEN. Because kitchen coffee is more appealing than bathroom coffee.<br />
<br />
We took Lukey to practice and then Molly, Finny and I went to Staples for yet another round of school supplies.<br />
<br />
Lucky Lukey had Noah’s bar mitzvah tonight. Saturday evening at the Fairmont. As you do. He got a Stroman jersey and a Champions visor. And lots and lots of candy. While he was dancing and shouting at his friends over music, Eric and I were meeting with Kevin over beer at Cactus. The standard Saturday 10:30 pm priorities meeting.<br />

So if one of your son’s good friends is officially A MAN, should some of that manliness apply to our kid? Maybe we will wake up in the morning and find that he has made us a frittata and espresso.Ericandleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03556627406997678225noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16157183.post-78230285648703642842019-09-14T01:02:00.003-07:002019-09-14T01:02:35.167-07:00Day 12Day 12 wall. It is almost 1:00 am. I am up sending emails. But I will stick to my word and get a quick blog done.<br />
<br />
I popped into the Saints Grade 8 parent coffee this morning after dropping off a cheque at WPGA and delivering Molly to school. There were lots of people I like there, but I did endure a few painful conversations of "my son is better than you son" oneupmanship. Some seriously passive aggressive flexing on genetics there.<br />
<br />
Then I put in a full day with my dad looking at company finances. Productive and so helpful. Dads are the best. It's not every small company that has that much accounting muscle at its fingertips. We are so lucky to have the help.<br />
<br />
Lukey and Finny got home from camp very wet, very tired and very happy to be home. Lukey was flexing on how miserable his camp experience was...until he heard hers. She won. She had the win with the mouse peeing all over her sweatshirt the first afternoon. And I believe it went downhill from there.<br />
<br />
It was awesome to have all of us under one roof again. I actually made dinner (appliances applied!!) and we played some One Night Werewolf (man, Finny and Lukey are GOOD. Molly and I are sitting ducks. Literally useless. We can't lie, we can't bluff, we can't hide anything. I don't think either of us won in about ten games).<br />
<br />
Then back to the computer to work for a couple of hours. Ahhh, the weekend...haha!!Ericandleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03556627406997678225noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16157183.post-24388097517194661962019-09-13T00:39:00.001-07:002019-09-13T00:39:16.544-07:00Day 11I am really happy to be blogging again, but I have set myself a trigger to remember to do it each night. I've told myself I am not allowed to pick up my phone in bed and mindlessly flip through stupid stuff until I have blogged. Funny thing, though. At the end of the day when I am tired and ready to call it a night...I want to pick up my phone and mindlessly flip through stupid stuff. So it can feel a little disappointing to put the stupid stuff aside and pick up the computer instead.<br />
<br />
Until I remember why I am doing this. It is its own reward (said in a super cheezy way...I wish I could insert the audio on how this sounds in my head).<br />
<br />
Update on the campers...I have no idea how they are doing, but I can tell you that there must have been eight hours straight of bucketing rain today. For Lukey's group, I can honestly say I am feeling more sorry for the adults that are stuck with 100+ Grade 8 boys with cabin fever. I am sure they kids are having a blast. For Finny though, that is some relentless cold and wet on a remote mountaintop. Yuck. It will be one of those trips that is memorable and funny...in hindsight.<br />
<br />
As for our only child, she has been living it up with the other away. We didn't do anything special today, but she does seem to be enjoying the life of the singleton.<br />

She is just straight up good company. Is it weird to feel like the company of another person is almost like being alone (because you feel so comfortable and familiar), but also super enjoyable at the same time?<br />
<br />
It was a good day for another reason...our appliances arrived!<br />

They aren't hooked up, but they are in the building!<br />
<br />
And we end each night lately with a midnight visit from Ernie. Here is your dose of cuteness (if Molly and I in mud masks wasn't enough for you)...Ernie crawling through a roll of toilet paper.<br />

I would get myself a new phone? At least 90% of that is motivated by wanting a better camera. But an iPhone 6 takes perfectly fine pictures, you say. Does it?<br />

<br />
Isn't it a masterpiece? Can't you feel the excitement and tension in the group? The crackle of energy as the little boys prepare to battle the outdoors? What's that? It is so blurry that you can't even make the location? Huh.<br />
<br />
I will say that my "take pictures and capture the ordinary moments" muscles are a little weak. I don't think to pull out my camera. But let's be real. It isn't great when I do. So that isn't all that motivating.<br />
<br />
I did take a shot this morning when I came back from dropping Lukey off at camp. It struck me as a little funny that Finny was gone overnight last night, but both Lukey and Molly still slept on her floor. And when I got back from dropping Lukey, it was just Molly. In Finny's room.<br />

Molly apparently plans to go right back there tonight. Alone. Haha!<br />
<br />
When Molly came back home from school, she was an only child. Funny that she spent her first year and a half on the planet with her parents all to herself. Things sure changed.<br />
<br />
We worked until we were starving, then headed to Main Street for dinner at Meet on Main. It was great. Just the three of us. When we wandered out of there, we stopped at a late night used book store and I found "The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole age 13 3/4" for Molly (she's reading it right now at my feet).<br />
<br />
On our way home, our only child asked for an extra drive, so we went over the Cambie bridge and back. I just don't think any of us wanted it to end.<br />
<br />
We came home and Molly found this spry little snail on our hedge. He was so stretchy and curious. She called him Stargazer. We had a brief debate if we should take him off the top of the hedge or not (potentially dangerous), but I argued it might have been his life work to get up there in the first place.<br />
<br />
I hope we did you right, Stargazer!<br />

The forecast for Garibaldi remains snow for most of the week, so she was a little apprehensive about cold. She even switched sleeping bags at the last minute with Lukey.<br />

<br />
I hope she is somewhere warm right now. Maybe she will have gotten her temperature up by carrying her 20 lbs of snacks up the mountain. Fingers crossed that there are no critters excited by her array of junk.<br />
<br />
The saga of Molly's timetable continues. I continue to have daily phone calls with the school. While I have enjoyed getting to know the Grade 12 counsellor (sounds sarcastic, but it really isn't...she's lovely!), we could really do without the unnecessary stress of the start to the school year. At least I can say Byng Arts has stayed consistent. Very much looking forward to putting the whole thing behind us.<br />
<br />
After school, we headed over to the Steenburghs' for their KidSport fundraiser of a street party with a Triple O's food truck. As much as we have had lots of conversations about the frustrations of trying to make teams for the Cobras and losing some good players to other clubs, it is nice to remember that for some awesome kids, like Ella, making the Cobras brought tears to her eyes.<br />
<br />
So much work to do this week, it's crazy. Lukey is off too camp tomorrow (Camp Squeah by Hope), so it will be just Molly until Friday. Sending wishes for good weather for both those campers!Ericandleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03556627406997678225noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16157183.post-57742597328263553032019-09-10T00:03:00.004-07:002019-09-10T00:03:45.624-07:00Day 8...was great! Well, comparatively.Monday morning. Fresh slate...woohoo!<br />
<br />
Guess what? Everyone was at school ON TIME! Guess what? They all had all their stuff. Oh, wait...I was just typing that and it wasn't quite true. On time, yes. With everything, yes. But we did turn back once. I'm looking at you, Finny. She forgot her whole outtrip backpack. Not too sure how that is possible. You should see how big it is.<br />
<br />
I did not cry today. That breaks my streak of a few days. That my friends, is what they call progress.<br />
<br />
Worked all day and even managed lunch with my husband. Finny, Lukey and I went to Solly's for an after school/after activity (volleyball and rugby) snack. Back in the day, that was a little knish in a bag. Now a days, they eat multiple bagels each. And a cinnamon bun. <br />

The jury is still out on rugby. Lukey doesn't understand the rules. This makes it quite challenging to play. His mother would like him to wear one of those head protectors. It is more than likely that a kid wearing on of those would be targeted for destruction. It would be like sending him out in one of these:<br />

<br />
I wonder if those come in a youth large?<br />
<br />
Lukey had his first house hockey practice in five years...apparently pretty fun. And the kids and Eric came home to me with a dinner package from my mum. Because she loves me and takes good care of me. Pasta, a toasted bun, peaches, a fork and a napkin. Have I ever felt so loved???<br />
<br />
So, the week is looking up.<br />
<br />
Finny is off to Garibaldi tomorrow and seems relatively prepared. They are only calling for a bit of snow. No, really. And lightning. And Lukey leaves for a much more comfortable camp on Wednesday. One kid family...? What will we do??<br />

<br />
Do people read newspapers and drink leisurely coffee on Sundays? Are there walks in the park or bike rides taken? Antique shopping or movie marathons? Huh.<br />
<br />
One day, when I grow up, I want to have lazy Sundays.<br />
<br />
In the meantime, not so much. We ran tryouts today for all our boys teams for the fall (including Lukey). Eric logged many hours in the gym.<br />

<br />
<br />
I spent some time there and some time running around with Finny and Molly tracking down stuff for Finny to take to camp. Like...wait for it...gluten free oatmeal. We got lucky finding that one. We bought enough snacks for Finny to open a corner store at the top of Garibaldi this week. We scored some sweet, cheap hiking boots at Canadian Tire (those puppies aren't broken in, so I see blisters in middle daughter's future). Some wool socks at Mark's WW.<br />
<br />
Mum and Dad, being amazing parents, both obviously heard a razor thin tone in my voice and decided it was time to bring back Sunday dinner (hooray for pity that comes with food and love). We had a big spread of Ridge Garden food. We ate on real plates and had actual silverware. We did not eat in a bedroom. It was fancy and fantastic.<br />
<br />
I had a thought today, as I crossed the city shopping with the girls. I am having a pity party this week, guest list of 1. But really, who am I kidding? There is so much love in my life. So many moments that are funny because we are in it all together. I am pretty pathetic for whinging about anything.<br />

Plus, tomorrow is Monday. A fresh start.Ericandleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03556627406997678225noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16157183.post-75854940286730165282019-09-08T00:27:00.001-07:002019-09-08T23:52:09.647-07:00Day 6<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When I think about what I why I want to blog, it's to try and capture the fleeting things...the feelings and the events that aren't the big milestones or unforgettable moments. So much of what is lost in time is the impermanent and unremarkable stuff. </div>

Like eating dry Cheerios on the floor of our bedroom on a Saturday morning. Why? Because we still have no downstairs, no kitchen, no dishes or silverware. It has been one big carpet picnic all summer. </div>

<br />
Eric and I had a nice slow morning. Apparently we are either too old or too stressed to sleep in anymore, so we chatted and worked in bed. Then the kids slowly come upstairs and banquet on our floor.<br />
<br />
Finny and Eric left to work out a bit and we planned to meet at Jacquie's 70th birthday at the Hall's. We watched some of the US Open (first Canadian to reach the finals, let alone win it!) and then Eric called to say that he would have to help out at our girls tryouts because we were short staffed. We did a typical Butler event, as all five of us were there together for about 30 seconds. Eric left, Finny and Lukey had a big fight, I took Finny home and Lukey stayed outside...Molly and I had a delightful visit and some yummy cake :)<br />
<br />
Finny had tryouts, but was in the doghouse, so had to bike. I didn't go at all...which is nice. I love working with sports and kids. I believe wholeheartedly in what we do, but I don't love tryouts. Not because I hate to see kids give it their all. But because I hate to see kids give it their all and get cut. I know, I know...that's sports. In fact, when I think about our own kids sometimes getting cut (like Lukey this year at hockey), I value what they learn from trying their best and not succeeding. If you always get what you want, what do you learn? I truly believe in all parts of the process, even (or especially) the occasional failure. But, do I want to do it? Or look at their little faces? Uh, no.<br />
<br />
Lukey is at Arden's tonight for a sleepover. The comfort of an old friend in a week full of new experiences.<br />
<br />
And by the way, I have decided to set a goal and a reward for myself for blogging. If I blog every day until the end of October, I will get myself the new iPhone with the awesome camera. Motivation.<br />
